CHAFFEY DAM: TIME FOR REAL ACTION MINISTER COSTA
Thursday, 19 August 2010 00:00

NSW Leader of The Nationals Andrew Stoner and The Nationals Duty MLC for Tamworth Trevor Khan today called on State Labor Water Minister Phillip Costa and the State Labor Government to stop mucking around and get on with the augmentation of the Chaffey Dam.

Yesterday Federal Minister for Climate Change, Energy Efficiency and Water, Senator Penny Wong said a re-elected Gillard Government would provide additional funds of$10.4 million for the augmentation of Chaffey Dam, bringing total Federal funding to $16.9 million for the project.

“This is yet more spin from a train wreck of a Federal Labor Government,” Andrew Stoner said.

“After years of inaction we are now meant to believe that Minister Wong is suddenly on-board and supportive of the augmentation of Chaffey Dam.

“And where is the clearly outlined timetable for the project from State Minister for Water Michael Costa?

“This last ditch announcement smells like the one Julia Gillard threw at the voters of Western Sydney when she promised the Epping to Parramatta rail link last week.

“The Nationals have made clear their commitment to seeing the augmentation of Chaffey Dam progressed.

“At both State and Federal levels we are 100% behind the augmentation of Chaffey Dam.”

The Nationals Duty MLC for Tamworth Trevor Khan said that it was only a 2 days ago that State Minister for Water Michael Costa could only promise further discussions with the Federal Government about the funding of the augmentation, now suddenly we are led to believe there is real money on the table.

"What we now have to see is the State Water Minister immediately commence talks with Tamworth Regional Council to finalise a funding split for the balance of the costs of construction. There is simply no reason for further delay,” Trevor Khan said.

“It was only a couple of months ago that The Nationals leader Andrew Stoner was in Tamworth committing the State Opposition, if they win government in March next year, to resolving the funding formula and moving forward on the augmentation as soon as possible.

“If it were not for the NSW Liberals & Nationals constant attention to this issue, together with the local media, the State Water Minister would have let this issue fall completely off the agenda.

“The people of the Tamworth electorate have watched and waited to see action on this issue for years. It’s time for some real action on the augmentation of Chaffey Dam.” Trevor Khan said.

O'FARRELL RENEWS CHALLENGE FOR TOWN HALL-STYLE DEBATES

After the success of last night’s townhall-style debate at the Rooty Hill RSL Club, NSW Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell has again challenged Premier Kristina Keneally to a series of similar events in the lead up to the 2011 State Election.

“Last night’s forum provided an example of democracy in action, It was interaction between the nation’s leaders and real people – and that’s good for democracy,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“Ms Keneally has so far refused to agree to my request for a series of town hall debates in the lead up to next year’s election, but after the strong interest in last night’s event she should now agree.

“Ms Keneally and I should have a series of genuine debates in regional centres like Western Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle, Tamworth, Port Macquarie and Dubbo.

"There is always talk about  the level of public disengagement with politics. The high voter turnout at the recent Nationals Community Preselection trial in the Tamworth electorate has shown the level of interest our community has in the political process." Trevor Khan said.

In June this year nearly 4,300 people from across the Tamworth Electorate took part in the Community preselection with Kevin Anderson winning comfortably.

"The more people get involved the better outcomes will be." Trevor Khan said.

"Itis time for the people to again have the chance to have their say in the political process, this time as participants in a town-hall style forum. I'm sure the people of Tamworth would welcome the opportunity to ask Premier Keneally questions about the State Labor Government's:

Failure to redevelop Tamworth Hospital as promised prior to the last State election;

Inaction on the augmentation of Chaffey Dam; and

Refusal to commit funds to the building of a secure water supply for Barraba through the construction of a pipeline from Split Rock Dam."

"The Tamworth people have a lot of questions, why won't Ms Keneally front us in the town-hall and answer them?"

Costa's 'commitment' has no hope

Trevor Khan, The Nationals Duty MLC for Tamworth, today responded to confusing comments by NSW Water Minister, Phil Costa, over the augmentation of Chaffey Dam.

Mr Costa in The Northern Daily Leader today said that water savings at Menindee Lakes was the key to funding the augmentation of Chaffey Dam, which he estimated to be $25 million.

"The State Labor Government has a long track record of making grand announcements that never have a hope of materialising. This is just another in a long line." MrKhan said.

"The people of Tamworth shouldn't be reliant on events a thousand kilometres away at Menindee Lakes."

"For this plan to work you'd need to pull a genie out of a bottle, but in this case it seems the genieis a thousand kilometres away" Mr Khan said.

Mr Costa's quoted cost of $25 million, is also widely out of line with current projections.

The estimated cost he quotes takes no account of Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Safety Upgrade. At this point only Stage 1 has been funded. If the augmentation, along with the prerequisite Stage 2 safety upgrade, are undertaken together the estimated cost is $41million. That is $16 million more than the figure used by Mr Costa.

"It's plain that either Mr Costa doesn't know what he's talking about or he's playing tricky politics with imaginative accountancy."

"Labor's commitment becomes less credible the closer you examine it. It simply doesn't add up."

"It's not possible for Chaffey Dam in totality to only cost $25 million. There's no way they can deliver ontheir commitment at that level of funding."

"The issue of the augmentation of Chaffey Dam has been talked about for years. Peter Draper has taken every opportunity to have pictures taken with State Labor Ministers, issuing countless press releases. Despite all the photos and talk we have only seen a constant failure to deliver vitally needed infrastructure projects to this region."

"The only way we'll see realaction on securing Tamworth's water supply, is to make a real commitment, based on real numbers. You're not finding that from either Mr Costa or Mr Draper"Mr Khan said

Shadow Police Minister hears local Police concerns

Shadow Minister for Police Mike Gallacher, at the request of Kevin Anderson, the Nationals candidate for Tamworth, today met with members of the Tamworth Police Association.

The meeting canvassed local police concerns regarding insufficient police numbers in Tamworth and safety issues with the police Ford Ranger vans which just last week were banned by the NSW Police Association after a series of dangerous rollovers.

"I've been listening to residents across Tamworth and what I keep hearing is that the police don't have the resources to do their job properly. Our meeting today with local police members confirms residents' worst fears." Kevin Anderson said.

"Kevin contacted me about residents concerns and I had to come here and see it first hand. By talking with local police members I know there are some real issues which this incompetent State Labor Government seem incapable of dealing with." Mike Gallacher said.

"Local police have told me they've been crying out for more numbers for a long time, yet they don't seem to be getting anywhere with this Government.

"I'm really worried about the safety of our police men and women, being provided with dangerous vans which have a history of rollingover, even at low speeds.

"I'll be reporting back to Barry O'Farrell and the Shadow Cabinet about my meeting here in Tamworth and the problems with staffing levels and the real dangers involved with the Ford Ranger vans."

"I brought Mike Gallacher up here only 9 months ago to meet with the community. He saw for himself the problems with policing in the area. But since then nothing has changed. Macquarie Street doesn't seem to care about the people of Tamworth." Trevor Khan, Duty MLC for Tamworth, said.

"With everything I'm hearing on the ground it seems people are ready for a change of Government. I'm glad that Mike knows exactly what's going on here and I hope we will be able to work together to ensure Tamworth is better policed." Kevin Anderson said.
